Larian Studios Announce a New Divinity, Calling it Their Most Ambitious RPG Yet

The buzz about The Game Awards was significant, notably after host Geoff Keighley shared an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The secret is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a brand-new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a daring trailer packed with memorable imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very descent into chaos.

Moving Beyond Original Sin

Anyone expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a direct sequel to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not on the cards right now.

That said, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This phrasing suggests that the team might be building a real-time experience as opposed to another tactical title. For now, this is speculation, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is widely praised and many say it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are defined by detailed worlds, branching plots, and flexible progression—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with specialized paths you can achieve with a distinct build with a unique decision path.

The series is also famously flexible, allowing players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be approached in a variety of manners, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might find an answer because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could overcome an obstacle by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games ever made. Now, the RPG community can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
